Humbleness

Yeditepe University Faculty of Communication Department of Visual Communication Design

Humbleness is the opposite of arrogance, condescendigness and destruction. It is equal to understanding, modesty, tolerance, respect and high charitability Humbleness is a path for humanity to take not to forget the humbleness that exist in their nature. This path does not lead to discriminating, humiliating dictating and destructive kind of strength that power, wealth, knowledge and beauty sometimes given to humans.
Humbleness is having power but not using it for ruling and dictating.. Humbleness is sometimes is having the last word but not for using it for destruction. Humbleness is being knowledgeablebut not to condescend and humiliate the ignorant, it is for embracing him. Humbleness is studying nature but not to own it, it is for the consciousness of being part of it.
Humbleness is being aware of contradictions, diversity and in spite of these it is to love and respect. It is the acceptance of the unity of the nature, the universe and the humanity. Humbleness is a virtue that was an essence of the cultural values of İstanbul for thousands of years. It represents and defines the traditions of the culture of the City and also the City itself. The design culture of İstanbul reflects this modesty, simplicity of the proportions that are in harmony with nature that shaped the City for centuries.
This design culture now is being constantly transformed into the culture of consumption that has been imposed by global capitalism. Tallest towers, the big shopping centers, big buildings of cement and steel now occupy the City and İstanbul not only losing her character and her unity with nature but she also is trying to dominate the nature.
Manifesto of this biennial exhibition is humbleness, an essence of the cultural values of İstanbul among others. The young generation that questions what will the future of designs represent and look like in the light of scientific and technological developments today, analyzes and criticizes this humbleness concept against the canvas of concerns, ecological consciousness, sustainability and human relations and present their ideas
