Unkept Promises
Inspired by the works of the artists in 13th Istanbul Biennial, we turned it into a workshop where we can move with the concepts we got from them. We tried to put together different projects that came out within the frame of these concepts..
Melis Özdemir; In the work named “The Unvisibles”, through researches done in Kurtuluş district and its whereabouts, the ways of getting in contact with Chinese immigrants who remained hidden in the district. In order to tell people the fact that these people are among us and all around world and raise awareness about global migration movements, “Lucky Cookies” were used. The lucky cookies contains such unaggressive statements as; “I extended my passport to the immigration officer. The man look at the passport first and then me and asked ‘what are you?’ Grace Murray Hopper. “We settle not in a new country but a new language.” Emile M. Cioran,
Maral Kazar ; in the work named “Lost memories” I reflected my personal memory regarding Kurtuluş district where we have lived 3 generations with Armenian alphabet. I want to write Armenian word “ՍԷՐ” meaning love on the glass of the building door with stained glass technique for true life experiences in the wooden building where Mr. Garbis lived for years and was abandoned after his death, my and my family’s recollections.
Esra Kanat; in the work named “You want to see” I researched the fields that are owned by the municipalities and considered small and useless. Gordon Matta Clark reacted when architectures called those small parcels left behind as “dead space” when they planned the cities. I want to bring to life those dead spaces in the university by applying pattern form in digital. I am using wall papers which are interior design material in public space.
Aysel Nur Tiren; in the work named “Poetic”, using a public space, a university yard, I want to make a performance area with a single person statute-podium and I want to perform a poetic text that I will prepare with a fellow student. It is recovery of the university yard by means of poem, a sort of poetic occupation or occupation of poetry.
Ayşe Esin Durmaz; in the work named “Mondrian Before Destruction” I aim to transform those region of urban transformation projects into an art form before their destruction. The city dwellers will take their place in the paintings by Piet Mondrian in their pure form. The paintings by Mondrian were the products of an artist who was in search of clarity after the destructive effect of World War 1. My work on the other hand will transform into a memory of the city before great destruction and slaughter.
