Craftsman’s Diary, approached the craft neighborhoods that are under threat of displacement in Galata-Şişhane region as a part of design education and resituated the studio in the city. The 2nd year industrial design students experienced the small scale craft oriented process over a period of 6 weeks. As groups of two, students have worked in 10 different workshops (lampshade, chandelier, wire bending, acrylic, metal, pantograph, carving and musical instruments) and produced two projects: lighting fixtures and installations that is inspired by the impressions, experiences and the knowledge they have gained from the process. By structuring an interactive and simultaneous design-production-education process; material, maker techniques and knowledge of the master feed into the design and enables thinking and designing through making.
Craftsman’s Diary approached the product design beyond its ‘industrial’ context and intended to interrelate design education with the craftsmanship.
