Kadir Has University Cibali Campus
The Institute for Design & Architectural Typologies (Graz University of Technology, Austria) held its master design studio with 16 graduate students in Istanbul in the summer semester 2014 in cooperation with the Kadir Has University. The results of this design studio will be exhibited within the 2nd Istanbul Design Biennial Academy Programme.
The project site is the disused dockyard Haliç Tersanesi characterised by its central location on the water, the spatial uniqueness of its historic harbour basin and the unmistakeable view of the iconic, historic old city on the other bank. Materially understanding and working with this “genius loci” the architectural projects concentrated on these remarkable qualities of context in the form of a campus structure thus overlaying the topographically sophisticated site with organising structures. Hereby the shape of the campus determines the zoning and spatial setting of the area and sets off the relationship to the water and thus indispensably to the old city opposite. By concentrating on the architectural formulation of perceptual frameworks for the qualities of the present context, a campus structure for multi-facetted use with a conspicuous, open public space on the water is to be interwoven in this design.
